THESIS IDEA:
Architecture is constantly evolving. Where the architectural profession, as a whole, has always responded to each cultural swing with a unique solution; the value of design as a process of making has often fallen short to the constraints of a given time period. Part of a cultural rotation, the relationship of art and architecture has orbited in and out of the spotlight of history. In my architecture, art is always the first expression of my design process. For me, Inconsistent mediums and ambiguous intentions become the tools of discovery in responding to a design problem. I want to see more architecture that justifies the art as a process of design. Contemporary culture, now more than ever, understands the power and beauty of art as it has become a large part of everyday advertising, entertainment, leisure, politics, and so on. I believe that through the traditional use of the diagram, the architect can sell expression as a component of design and the artistic license can be reintroduced into the architecture of a culture.
PROGRAM IDEAS:
My initial programmatic response is one that is allowed to directly analyze and react to a place and culture that is foreign to my everyday. To enter a design challenge without preconceived ideas of place or vernacular has a great value in my methodology, as it is the act of learning a culture that will fuel my architectural process. I am proposing two very different sites to test my thesis.
1. A City Entrance, LĂ©ogane, Haiti : Epicenter of the January 12, 2010 earthquake; a place in need of serious architectural revitalization.
2. Plattsburgh AFB, New York, USA : Once a great city turned ghost town, this site has incredible opportunity for an adaptive reuse.
